W to restructure College of Education & Human Sciences

Faculty and staff of the College of Education and Human Sciences were surprised to learn earlier this month that the college is being restructured, and that departments within the college will be moved to other colleges on campus.

The W announced on March 8 that the college will be restructured effective July 1, partly as a cost-saving measure.

An important celebration is taking place at Mississippi University for Women this weekend.

Homecoming is a valued event on campus, as alumni and current students unite to enjoy festivities and cherish traditions. Laura Tubb Prestwich, an alumna from the graduating class of 2008, expressed what homecoming at The W means to her.

W professor holds book signing on campus

The W’s very own creative writing professor, Michael Smith, held a book signing on Feb. 8 at The Bookend on campus.

The signing featured Smith’s second work, “Desperation Road,” which was released on Feb. 7. “Desperation Road” features a woman and her child walking along an interstate and the desperation they encounter. Smith uses his work to inspire other young writers both in and out of the classroom.

Himalayan Tigers, IV League win IM volleyball championship

The Himalayan Tigers and IV League won The W’s Spring 2017 intramural volleyball championship.

The Himalayan Tigers lost their first set 10-21 then beat SC 10-21, 21-15, 21-10 and 21-6 in the final sets of the men’s volleyball championship. IV League defeated Lockhearts 21-14 and 21-17 to claim the women’s championship.

W shapes up to shop with 2017 Spring Fitness Challenge

The 2017 Spring Fitness Challenge is already underway, with 244 W students and faculty members competing to be the “biggest loser” this semester.

For five years now, Campus Recreation and Passport to Wellness have sponsored and organized this weight-loss competition. Yet LeAnn Alexander, director of Campus Recreation, says there’s more to it than just dropping a few pounds.

The presidential election results had various emotions circulating the campus as well as the rest of the nation. 

“What I witnessed when I came back to school immediately the next day was just—silence,” said Mattie Walls, a Family Studies major at The W. “Everyone walked around like it never happened. We didn’t discuss it in class. You may have discussed it a lot with your family and friends, but at school it was like no one said anything about it.”

W alum speaks about getting a job after college

W alum Jamie Scrivener met with students on Nov. 10 to talk about how to get a job in the communication field after college.

Scrivener is currently working as the Public Relations and Sports Information Director for Mississippi Delta Community College. She graduated from The W in 2013 with a degree in Communication and a minor in Marketing.

The W to have changes in facilities management

The W is set for a change of faces as Sodexo is making way for GCA Services Group. Sodexo’s contract for facilities management with The W is expiring at the end of this year, and GCA will replace it.

“Sodexo’s facilities management contract with The W facilities management is expiring this December," said Dave Haffley, director of Outsourced Resources. "So we had issued [Request for Proposals] in August calling for companies to bid. A committee of seven to evaluate the RFPs was formed, and they addressed the bids through September and October and decided for GCA Services Group."
