MUW celebrates Black History Month

Mississippi University for Women and other campus organizations will be hosting several events on campus in celebration for Black History Month.

Fant Memorial Library will host a Meet the Author Film Series every Tuesday throughout the month. “Zara Neale Huston: Jump at the Sun” was the first film featured on Tuesday, Feb. 4. After each viewing, there will be an open discussion and refreshments.

The Young Black Leadership Association (YBLA) will also host a few events during February. The first event was an interest meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Anyone who is interested in joining YBLA is invited to attend. The organization will also be hosting a kickball event in Stark Recreation Center on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 6:30 p.m.

The W Leadership Program will be leading the campus in a day of service on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. This will be a day that The W students, faculty and staff can give back to their community at the Columbus Boys and Girls Club.

On Saturday, Feb. 22, the Department of Music will be hosting a recital highlighting Krystal Hill Keys and Ayari Taylor. The recital will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council will be hosting Club Caf in Hogarth Cafeteria on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 1 p.m. This event will highlight African-American literature and other Black History Month facts. Students and faculty are invited to come enjoy coffee and entertainment.

As a part of the 3 Days to Employment for students, there will be a dining etiquette dinner. The dinner will be held in Shattuck Hall on Thursday, Feb. 27 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Students need to register via My Student Life.

DREAM United will also be hosting a couple of events for Black History Month. The first event is a dancing series in Stark Aerobic Studio on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 5:15 p.m. Participants will be invited to participate in traditional African dances.

The final event of the month is the third annual Black Excellence Gala hosted by DREAM United. This gala is open to students, faculty, and staff. It will be held in Pope Banquet Room on Friday, Feb. 28, from 5:30-7 p.m.
