Nepali students celebrate, explain Festival of Lights

Joanna Frye

Religion Editor

November is a month that most Americans associate with turkey and Thanksgiving. But for many Nepali students on The W’s campus, it is a month more associated with the stars.

The W has a large community of Nepali students, most of whom are Hindu. During the month of November, Hindus celebrate a five-day festival called Tihar, or Festival of Lights. It was celebrated from Nov. 9-13 of this year. The time when the festival is celebrated each year depends on the positioning of stars.

Put down the cell phone and nobody gets hurt

Asia Duren

In recent years, the everyday use of cell phones has skyrocketed, and I am not alone in believing that they are ruining our relationships.

I cannot count the times I have been with a group of friends sitting in pure silence. We were not silent because we were sad, tired or angry, but because we were all on our cell phones. When a conversation does start, it spurs from a post someone saw on Facebook or a picture someone posted on Instagram. That is absolutely insane. If a room full of educated college students cannot carry on a conversation without getting ideas from social media, then where is our society headed?

A mathematics professor at The W has decided to share her martial arts knowledge with students.

On Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. and Thursdays from 2-4 p.m., students can participate in the aikido club in Pohl gymnasium. Aikido is a Japanese martial art that focuses primarily on redirecting momentum into falls and rolls. Dr. Susan Ficken teaches intermediate algebra, pre-calculus and modern algebra. She has also been practicing aikido since 2006 and encourages everyone to try it at least once.

The W is a friendly community for all

In a fast-changing world, people can face the issue of not being accepted or appreciated for who they are or what they believe. This includes the group of individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning ─ also known as the LGBTQ+ community.

Across the nation, people of this community endure hardships and ridicule because of their identities and their life choices. However, at The W, those who identify within this community have a different story to tell.

Frugal fall fashion

In a world where most of our money is spent on books or bills and our energy is spent on getting that homework assignment turned in on time, fashion can take a backseat. Thankfully, this season, the old is new again, and a great outfit can be thrown together with very little effort or expense.

"You can just wear jeans and Chucks, and it won't be a terrible fashion faux pas. You can start to wear plaid again. You can even raid your dad's wardrobe and start to wear his sweaters or roll up the sleeves on his plaid shirts. Very 90s Seattle of all of us," explains Mia, a Philadelphia, Penn., drummer who is excited to see the grunge look of her youth re-appearing on the runway.
