Living life according to Lynch: an editor's column

On Jan., 16, the world said goodbye to one of the most innovative filmmakers in history,

David Lynch, who made the strange and unfamiliar a place to find comfort and unity.

Lynch’s work as a writer, artist, and filmmaker is unforgettable and will forever remain part of the pop culture zeitgeist. Without his work and contributions to art, film and television, we would not have many shows or movies we know and love today.

As worldwide memorials have poured in, people are not just remembering Lynch for his movies and shows alone. He is remembered for his optimistic, fresh and inspiring outlook on life and our place in this world, which has touched so many people.

I saw an ongoing X (Twitter) thread featuring people’s favorite Lynch quotes, advice, or pieces of wisdom. One quote, in particular, struck me as something essential we should all remember.

“Life should be blissful, and blissful doesn’t mean just a small happiness. It’s huge. It is profound,” Lynch said.

We can find small happiness easily, but it is often temporary and fleeting. The adventure of finding profound happiness can be quite tricky to find sometimes, but we have constant reminders of why we should have this happiness throughout our days and lives.

The world can beat us down sometimes and we can be left feeling defeated, but reminding ourselves we have breath in our lungs, life in our bodies and happiness in our hearts can make all the difference.

We should seek to be at peace and happy with our lives and ourselves by acknowledging the small things instead of just counting on big things or events that leave us wanting more happiness. Life should be full of consistent happiness that then turns into constant joy.

When we achieve the type of happiness that turns to joy that creates a blissful life, changes always follow. Your outlook on life, the future, your surroundings and views of the world tend to change when you chase an everlasting happiness that makes life great.

While you might not be a fan of Lynch’s work or familiar with him at all, his words of wisdom can resonate with everyone as we move forward in life. It might be a little late to add another New Year’s resolution, but we should all begin to live with the profound happiness Lynch describes.
